2022-12-30 Avebury Manor

Avebury manor is one of the finest Tudor manor houses in the country dating from the middle of the 16th century.

It is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public most days of the week.

It is unusual in that when the manor was vacated by the last tenants the National Trust in 2011 partnered with the BBC to create the television program 'The Manor Reborn' in which several of the rooms were refurbished to represent different periods in the houses history including Tudor, Georgian, Queen Anne etc. and as much of the furniture was authentically recreated by modern craftsman most things are hands on, you can sit in the chairs, play billiards, listen to the gramophone, try the Georgian exercise chair.

Avebury is also the place of the most interesting of standing stone circles in the country, unusual in as much as it has the village of Avebury in the middle of them (including a pub!). If you are visiting Wiltshire maybe to visit Stonehenge then I would urge you to also visit Avebury a few miles to the north of Stonehenge, you will not be disappointed.
